At approximately 6:22 a.m. on Oct. 23, 1983, a 19-ton Mercedes-Benz truck punched through a five-foot high concertina wire fence and into a four-story barracks housing Marines at the Beirut International Airport. The driver set off an estimated 21,000 pounds of TNT which first lifted the structure off the ground and then collapsed into a mass of concrete rubble. When the dust had settled, 220 Marines with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines – Battalion Landing Team had perished along with 18 sailors and 3 soldiers, marking the deadliest day for the Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima in Feb., 1945.

PAYMASTER’S REPORT:

Report approved as submitted. Detailed copies are available at each meeting, or upon request to the Paymaster or Adjutant.

MCL MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS:

In June, our detachment lost one member, who has not renewed. That member is John Richards.

In July, 100% of our members renewed. There are 9 members who are due to renew in September. As far as we know, National has not sent out renewal notices to our members. Neither Grant Cantrell, nor Melissa Rosa, who were present at the meeting and are due to renew in September, have received renewal notices in the mail. Melissa Rosa has been contacting members by phone or e-mail to notify members when their membership is due to renew.

GOLF OUTING: We will do a letter notifying the organizations who sent in money that the outing has been canceled and to see if they want the money returned or donated to the detachment for support of the SEVC and local charity work. Melissa Rosa will return the golfers’ money.

MARINE CORPS BALL: The tickets to the Ball will be $40 per person and that includes beer and wine. The DJ is “locked in.”

NEXT FLAG FUNDRAISER: It was proposed we do another flag fundraiser in November before Veteran’s Day at Wawa. Bob Lohr suggested the Detachment do the fundraiser on November 10th from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. before everyone goes to Cookie’s to celebrate the Marine Corps birthday.

TRIPS/SOCIAL: The Detachment would like to plan an outing to Quantico, VA next year. Tentative dates are leave on April 22nd and return April 24th.

TOYS FOR TOTS: October 10th is the date to get the boxes ready. Bob Lohr asked Cal Books to contact the appropriate personnel about the building we use at the beginning of September to see if we can use it and get in by the end of September. The dates for pick up this year are December 14th, 15th, and 16th. The dates for final distribution are December 17th and 18th.

VAVS: The Veteran’s Center has been downgraded from a 4.0 to a 2.0. Mr. Williams is not doing so well. He is unable to do his physical therapy. The cost to take care of a veteran at the Center is $10,000 a month.

ED SKOKOWSKI: A motion was made and passed to donate $100 to the Semper Fi Fund in honor of Ed Skokowski who recently passed away.

SWEATPANTS FOR VETERAN’S CENTER: Ken Butler is waiting for a price from Boscov’s on sweats for the Veteran’s Center. Once he receives the quote, then a motion can be made at another meeting for the purchase of sweats.

FALL FESTIVAL: A motion was made and passed for the purchase of canteen coupons for the SE Veteran’s Center Fall Festival. The amount was $200. Melissa Rosa reminded everyone the Fall Festival is October 31st and that all hands on deck are needed that day.

LOTTERY TICKETS: Bob Lohr suggested a fundraiser for the Detachment – lottery tickets. It was agreed that full participation from the detachment would be needed in order for this to be successful.

LADIES AUXILIARY POST 780: (Please see letter below with details of the event) The Ladies’ Auxiliary invited our Detachment to celebrate Veteran’s Day at 11 a.m. lunch provided at the Pottstown VFW. Contact Ruth Worrell.

NEXT MEETING: Monday, 14 September at 1900 @ American Legion in Spring City.

Many thanks to Melissa Rosa for her excellent notes from the August meeting. I was in Arizona for a college drop off at Arizona State University in Tempe and also for the Marine Corps League National Convention in Scottsdale.
